Q. What inspired you to pursue a career in mental health counseling with Black women?

A: Witnessing the systemic exclusion and mental health disparities that Black women face has deeply inspired me to pursue a career in mental health counseling to serve them. I am passionate about serving Black women because I believe that empowering them can positively impact our entire community. In many families, women are role models for their children, imparting major life concepts. By teaching Black women essential skills like coping, communication, mindfulness, and cognitive tools, it creates a ripple effect that will benefit their families for generations to come. My goal is to provide a safe space for Black women to unlearn unhealthy habits and feel empowered by their daily decisions. This work is profoundly rewarding, and I am committed to making a lasting difference in the lives of Black women and our communities.

Q. What is your experience in the mental health field?

A: I began my journey in the mental health field with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Winston-Salem State University in 2017. Building on this foundation, I earned a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from NC A&T State University in 2022, becoming a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA) the same year. Before pursuing my graduate degree, I had the privilege of serving underrepresented communities as an AmeriCorps service member. During this time, I facilitated social-emotional learning skills with individuals, groups and families, which underscored the critical need for greater access to mental health resources for minorities. As an AmeriCorps service member, I had the privilege of serving Black families that faced significant challenges, including food insecurity, lack of access to mental health care, and limited educational resources. In these communities, many children struggled with the burdens of their home environments, often lacking the support systems needed for emotional and academic success. My role as a Social Emotional Learning Facilitator was to create a safe space for these children, offering them a sanctuary where they could receive extra assistance with emotional regulation and behavior replacement skills.

I worked diligently to provide a nurturing environment where kids could process their home-life struggles, learn to manage their emotions, and develop healthier ways of coping. Each day was an opportunity to make a difference, whether it was through guiding a child through a tough moment, teaching them how to express their feelings constructively, or simply being a reliable and compassionate presence in their lives. The work was challenging but deeply rewarding, as I witnessed firsthand the resilience and potential of these young minds when given the right tools and support. The impact of such access can be profound and far-reaching.

Throughout my career, I have worked in various settings, including non-profit organizations, substance abuse recovery programs, and practices dedicated to addressing a wide range of mental health issues. My diverse experience has equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of the unique challenges and needs within different communities, further fueling my commitment to making mental health support accessible and effective for all.

Q: How would you describe your counseling style/approach?

A: As a therapist, I strive to create a warm and inviting environment where my clients feel truly seen and understood. My approach is down-to-earth and rooted in genuine connection on both cultural and empathetic levels. I believe that laughter and a sense of camaraderie are essential components of the healing process, and I work to foster a space where these elements can flourish. Although lightheartedness is a bonus to sessions, I never miss an opportunity to reflect deeply with my clients and confront underlying or negative beliefs. It is through these courageous conversations that we achieve the highest level of healing.

Q: What do clients have to say about it?

Clients often tell me that they appreciate my ability to match their energy and provide a comfortable, relatable atmosphere. I am deeply invested in each client's journey, and this commitment is reflected in the personalized exercises, thoughtful homework assignments, and tailored techniques we use during our sessions.

My goal is to equip my clients with the tools they need to make meaningful changes in their lives. I take pride in adapting the therapeutic experience to meet each individual's unique needs, ensuring that they feel supported and empowered every step of the way. Together, we work towards achieving their personal goals, fostering growth, and creating lasting positive change.

Q: Why is it important to help Black women through childhood trauma?

As a Black woman first and therapist second, I deeply understand the significance of addressing and healing childhood trauma, especially for Black women. Childhood trauma can have a profound and lasting impact, shaping how we view ourselves, our relationships, and the world around us. For Black women, these experiences are often compounded by systemic barriers and cultural factors that can make healing even more challenging. Specializing in cases of emotional abuse from narcissistic parents, I understand the deep scars left by being parentified and conditioned to internalize needs and concerns to avoid challenging authority figures. With empathy and expertise, I help my clients unravel the complex emotions tied to these experiences, offering a safe space to explore and address the wounds inflicted by those who were supposed to protect and nurture them.

My approach is rooted in empowering my clients to reclaim their voices and assert their boundaries, helping them break free from the cycles of silence and self-neglect. Through personalized therapy sessions, I support clients in recognizing and processing their trauma, teaching them to prioritize their own needs and well-being. Each step of the way, I stand as a steadfast ally, dedicated to transforming pain into strength and fostering a sense of resilience and self-worth.

Helping Black women heal from childhood trauma is essential because it allows them to reclaim their narratives and break free from the cycles of pain and dysfunction that trauma can perpetuate. By addressing these deep-rooted wounds, we can empower Black women to live fuller, more authentic lives.
