{Blog + Video} A TEDx Talk: Why Black Women Should Stop Being Responsible
In March 2023, I had the amazing opportunity to speak at TEDx University of North Carolina at Charlotte. It was a chance to give the public a glimpse of what my clients have been going through. I’m very passionate about the topic-people need to know how parentification and adultification has impacted Black women.
Being a therapist for the past 6 years, especially a Black therapist for Black women, has been like looking in a mirror and seeing more than one reflection. My work is so special to me. Since this video is going to out live me, I want Black women to know it’s time…..It’s time to stop being responsible for everyone else’s happiness, everyone else's feelings, and everyone else's desires. Being responsible is literally weighing you down. It’s impossible for you to be there for everyone and still maintain yourself. As the saying goes, “You can’t pour from an empty cup”.
So watch the TEDx video and share it with someone who needs to hear it.
